Hamilton Mausoleum
As part of an ideas competition, the project takes reference from the function of the Mausoleum and re-imagines the site as a collection of interventions exploring the broader meaning and relevance of life, death and the afterlife.
These themes are explored by the way of 3 key experiences in and around the mausoleum site. Life is the world that surrounds the Mausoleum and is represented by an expanded lush wild garden and woodland. Death is marked by a long, descending walkway between the refurbished keeper's lodge and the crypt of the mausoleum. Finally, the idea of an afterlife (or rebirth) is explored by the introduction of a scented reflection pool set within the centre of the Mausoleum.
The artwork represents these new interventions in an abstract and playful way. Using references from religion, art and mythology the aim is to represent a concept idea and the use of artistic references, particularly from the classical world, pays homage to the original inspiration and ambition of the Mausoleum.
