Museum of London, Smithfields
Stanton Williams are sensitively restoring and repurposing the former Horace Jones designed 19th Century Smithfield Market into a new museum and exhibition space for the Museum of London. Neil was involved in the project at various stages through his time at Stanton Williams, with particular focus on the restoration of the former poultry market glazing and shell concrete dome roof, once the largest shell concrete structure in Europe. The challenge was to bring this impressive structure up to date with modern thermal and waterproofing standards as well as considering its new purpose as an exhibition space.
The project is led by Stanton Williams in collberation with Asif Khan and conservation architect Julian Harrap, along with with ARUP and AKTII. The project recently received planning permission and is due to open to the public in 2026.
